ENGLISH

The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young Australians. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them.

The study of English plays a key role in the development of reading and literacy skills which help young people develop the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace. It helps them become ethical, thoughtful, informed and active members of society.

The English curriculum is built around three interrelated strands: language, literature and literacy. These three strands are assessed throughout the year by exploring different text types and genres. Throughout the years we will focus on enhancing students’ knowledge of English conventions while exposing them to a wide range of resources and reading material.

Throughout the year we expose students to a range of genres and text types. This includes persuasive writing, essay writing, news reports and feature articles, reviews, short responses and creative writing. Students are also exposed to a range of genres including realistic, fantasy, speculative fiction and science fiction. These texts represent a range of perspectives and expose students to issues and themes that affect the global community.

Our school is multicultural, and this is reflected in our English curriculum and the texts we explore. We engage with world issues and explore literature that our students can relate to.
