Piara Waters Senior High School is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment where all students, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN), can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our inclusive education approach provides support for SEN students within mainstream classes, while also offering specialised Endorsed Education Support program (HUB) for students requiring individualised pathways outside the mainstream Maths, English, Science and Humanities & Social Sciences curriculum.
The HUB programs at our school are designed to offer meaningful and relevant learning experiences tailored to the unique needs of each student. These programs employ a practical, hands-on approach to learning, emphasising the development of skills necessary for personal independence and success beyond the school setting. Students benefit from a modified curriculum aligned with their individual needs, guided by specialist teachers and supported by experienced Education Assistants (EAs). Parent involvement is a cornerstone of the program, ensuring that Special Education Needs (SEN) Plans (formerly known as Individual Education Plans (IEPs)) are authentic, meaningful, and collaboratively developed to meet the specific needs of each student. All HUB students are part of the Piara Waters Senior High School community and positive interactions are encouraged and supported through attendance at assemblies, end of term functions, reward excursions and incursions. Our HUB teachers and EAs work in partnership with the whole school staff to ensure a seamless flow for students as they progress from Year 7 onwards.
With a focus on Skills for life, the HUB students engage in explicit instruction covering areas such as Community Access and Travel Training, Work Readiness, Social Skills, and Protective Behaviours. These programs ensure that students acquire the skills necessary to participate actively and safely at school, at home, and within their broader community.
The curriculum for the HUB students is informed by the Western Australian Curriculum and includes functional literacy and numeracy, cross-curricular learning areas such as English, Mathematics, HASS, Science with a strong focus on STEM, community connections, independent living, Health and Protective Behaviours, Digital and Food Technologies, the Arts, and Languages. Documented plans such as SEN Plans are developed in close consultation with teachers, parents, Education Assistants and therapists. These plans outline priority learning objectives for each student and are implemented across school, home, and community contexts. Progress is formally reported at the end of each semester.
In 2025, the Education Support at Piara Waters SHS was enhanced with the integration of the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) courses. This addition has introduced greater relevance and rigor to the HUB curriculum, ensuring students gain academic credits that are formally recognised on their statement of results when they graduate.
Piara Waters Senior High School is committed to providing additional support services to enhance the experience of SEN students. The Social Club, available during break times, encourages the development of social skills in a safe and supportive environment. Morning Check-ins, guided by the zones of regulation, which help students begin their school day emotionally regulated and ready to learn. For SEN students participating in mainstream classes, specialist Education Assistants provide targeted support, while collaborative partnerships between mainstream teachers and SEN staff ensure that curriculum planning is responsive to individual needs.
The school’s SEN population consists of students residing within the designated intake boundary areas. This reflects our commitment to serving the local community through inclusive education practices.
The Inclusive Education model at Piara Waters Senior High School continues to provide a comprehensive and supportive environment for students with diverse needs. Through innovative programs, strong collaborative partnerships, and dedicated support structures, the school empowers SEN students to achieve independence, success, and meaningful participation within their communities.
